At 18 weeks, I had an "emergency ultrasound." Everything was fine- just like I thought it would be, but the doctor wanted me to come in and make sure. We were scheduled for our "20 week" ultrasound the following Monday. (this was the previous Tuesday) Once we were there the ultrasound tech asked if we just wanted to go ahead and do the big ultrasound. Suddenly, we realized that we were finding out if I was carrying a son or daughter!
Ty sat patiently through the whole ultrasound. With JJ and Ty we didn't find out their genders at the ultrasound so this was all new to us. Normally, as she put the wand on my belly we would have turned away but this time it didn't matter if we saw anything. She put the wand on my belly and I thought I saw something but kept my mouth shut when she didn't say anything.
The whole ultrasound went wonderfully, which shocked me as the doctor is always commenting on how active the baby was and how the baby runs from the doppler with it's heart rate near 170-180. If you look closely at the picture above you can see the baby is sucking his thumb and has his foot resting on my side. He had tried so hard during the whole ultrasound to get that thumb in his mouth. Soon after this moment he lost his thumb and tried to get it back, but hit himself in the head, startling himself.
Finally, it was time to find out the gender. We didn't want Ty to find out since JJ wasn't finding out then too so she simply placed the wand on the right place on the baby and typed the words "BOY!!!!!" I had seen what I thought I had at the beginning. While I thought there may be slight disappointment on my part the feeling that came over me was relief. We have all of our boy stuff and we know how to do boys. I love my boys. I love the way they love me. I was excited that he was going to have great male role models in his life just by watching his own family members.
When Hubby got home and my parents and sister and niece and her boyfriend all came over, we went outside and gave the boys a water gun filled with water. By squirting the water gun on their BIG BROTHER shirts they would find out the gender. If the water was pink= girl and if it was blue=boy.
It surprised the family that it was a boy! (Note to anybody who does this. Don't get distracted by having just announced and let your kids run crazy with the guns squirting each other. By the end Ty was the beginning of a smurf- we had to take off the food coloring with nail polish remover to get it to fade!)
This is the day of the ultrasound.
After a quick dinner we headed off to church where Carrie and Diana were having a VBS music practice to get them in for the fun. (Remember we didn't know we were having our ultrasound that day and I couldn't wait to tell people so yes- it had to happen that day!) We gave them a balloon filled with "It's a Boy!" confetti. They popped the balloon and watched the confetti. Joke was on me when the irradescent pieces were showing up as pink. They figured it out though! So, there's the story of finding out about Boy #3! A fun day that is going to go down in our family history. :)
AND...some of the old wives tales pointed at girl and some at boy.
(and stay tuned- once we have this little guy, who is unnamed, we will figure out if we liked knowing the gender or not knowing the gender.)
So, there
